It is not known exactly when the Kentwood and Eastern Railroad started operating but we do know that it stopped service in 1922. Many times when we don't have a start date that indicates that the railroad was possibly an offshoot or a successor to a previous railroad of a similar name and no one has been able to determine exactly when that split happened. Other times the records of when the railroad was started simply have been lost or destroyed by time, and even still other times we just haven't found the information yet.

As time progressed railroads began consolidating and today there are only 7 Class I railroads where once there were over 100. Railroads have adapted over the years from what used to be a good mix of freight and passenger transportation to what today is almost exclusively freight.
