Railroads produced as promotional items many pens and pencils with the railroad name on them. There are also fancier and more desirable pens or writing sets that were made for railroad managers or other high ranking employees. Objects that were cheap, newer, or commonly given away such as pencils or ballpoint pens will be cheap items that a new collector might enjoy, or could be a fun way to get a young person involved in the hobby. Older types of pens such as fountain or ink well pens dating to later 1800s – early 1900s, those made of beautiful engraved metals or other ornate and unique items can bring hundreds of dollars at auction.
