Much like builder’s plates, number plates from locomotives are very valuable, especially from larger headline making models. These were simply signs placed on the locomotive that displayed its number and they can vary in size based on the engine itself. Number plates are quite rare and can bring top dollar at the right auction. Because these plates are in such demand, there are reproductions and fakes that are in the market. If you’re a new collector interested in Locomotive number plates you should consult with experienced collectors and dealers to make sure you’re getting the real thing. There are a lot of small details and pieces of knowledge that can easily determine authenticity of Number plates, but only if you know what and where to look. Additionally, experienced collectors tend to know what plates have been reproduced and what to beware of.
